Pin brushes and metal combs are my weapons of choice for keeping a coat healthy. Weekly is usually enough, but every hair has to stand alone, which means combing out any loose undercoat and breaking up even the loosest "clumps". Back brush, back brush, back brush! Unless the dog is absolutely blowing, lightly spraying the coat with water before brushing also seems to help prevent breakage.

Now is the time to start conditioning your dogs for the Christmas parade. The walk in the parade is about a mile and a half so make sure that your Newfs are walked regularly and built up to that distance. That will make the parade more pleasant for you and your Newf!!.

When that intelligent, hardworking, honest judge finally sees what I

see in this dog I've worked so hard and long with, help me to accept

my win with grace and dignity. And, when that blind, clueless

idiot - I mean, judge - somehow fails to see what a fine job we've

done (well, at least better than the so-and-so he placed ahead of

us!), help me to accept my defeat with some of that same grace and

dignity.

Lord, you alone know how I've sweated blood over this dog, the hours

I've spent getting him ready (and, Lord, are any of them ever

ready?). You (and probably only you!) understand why I've spend

good money on this animal - money I could have spent on lots of

other things, things that just might have afforded me a little more

pleasure and a lot less frustration.

Lord, tolerate my disappointment when I lose, and help me keep it

all in perspective. Help me remember that when some dog show judge

gives me the gate, it's not as if St. Peter just gave me those

pearly ones.

Lord, clear my eyes and help me see before I open my big mouth, that

the so-and-so with the cow-hocked, pony-gaited dink walking out of

the ring ahead of me is actually a fellow exhibitor who has also

worked hard, maybe even sweated blood over her dog too, and probably

deserves to enjoy this moment to its fullest, as it shall not happen

again!

Lord, you know there are some times - but not nearly as often as I

tend to suppose - when such ugly things as Politics, Prejudice and

Unethical Practices may cause my dog to get beaten unfairly

sometimes. Help me, then, to remember that several wrongs won't

ever make a right, and that none of those wrongs gives me an excuse

to act like an idiot.

You know I'm a competitor, Lord; I make no bones about that. I love

to win and I hate to get beat. There are few things more abhorrent

to me, Lord, than placing sixth out of six. If I didn't love to

compete, I'd stay home and knit afghans. But then, there are

probably afghan shows, and people who hire professional knitters

with high-tech knitting machines, and most likely there are afghan

show judges who raise sheep whose wool goes into some of the

winningest afghans, and there I'd be - still frustrated, still

getting beat, and without a dog to share half the blame.

This year, Lord, help me to have a little more faith in my fellow

dog folks, and for Heaven's sake, help me win, or lose, with a

little class!

On Sat. Marie of Checkrd Flag in GA took Winners
bitch and best of Winners for a major for her
beautiful young lady, Winky. Yeah Winky! Her
handsome special boy , Dolby took breed. Gerri
Willis' inventive, energetic boy, Buddy took Winners
Dog for 1 point. I happen to love Buddy, and I often
beg Gerri to send Buddy here because his mischief
entertains me in a big way. Hooray Buddy!
Benita Ebb's' beautiful special girl Ellie took Best
Of Opposite. Atta girl, Ellie!
All the entrants were terrific. Kim Chonka's 2 girls
were making competition very hard to choose between,
as was Janice's Devila and my little friend, Riley,
who owns Gerri Willis. My Chickie was her usual
unpredictable self in the ring. On Saturday she
waited until she was in with all the other girls
behind her, and when she heard them coming along she
kept looking behind her, about had a panick attach
thinking, "Thry're after me!". Anyway, Chickie got
milage.
On Sunday, the girls' results were the same, The judge
seemed to deliberate long and hard, choosing Best Of
Breed, but again chose Dolby and this time Beau was
Winners Dog, earning him 1 point. Congrats to all the
winners.
Beau needs 1 more point to finish. I was telling
someone that it feels like we have been showing Beau
for 10 years, however, as he isn't even 3 years old
yet, my calculations must be off. We hope to finish
this coming Sunday in Jacksonville, FL
We went to Dog Show School last night. Beau, by this
point, is as well educated, if not more so, than my
youngest 2 legged child. With as much schooling as
he's had, he ought to have his BS, MS and PHD. As far
as I can tell, all he has accumulated is his DS (if
you are in doubt as to the meaning of DS, look under
the pooper scooper).

My wife and I had two Newfs in our family for about 13-14 years both of whom passed away early last year. We were located in various parts of the northeastern U.S while they were with us. We have subsequently moved to Mobile, Alabama and while we would like to open our home to another Newf, we're concerned about the warmer weather's effect. This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever seen at
MedVet.

My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix who ate half a
canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday. He started
with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't
call my emergency service until 7AM.

I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal failure
but hadn't seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her bring the dog in
immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet, and the doctor
there was like me - had heard something about it, but....

Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and
they said to give I V fluids at 1 ½ times maintenance and watch the kidney
values for the next 48-72 hours.

The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal less
than 27) and creatinine over 5 (1.9 is the high end of normal). Both are
monitors of kidney function in the bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and
started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40
and creatinine over 7 with no urine production after a liter of fluids. At the
point I felt the dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a
urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as overnight care.

He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values have
continued to increase daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a diuretic.
He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and they still couldn't control
his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his
creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his blood pressure,
which had been staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220. He continued to vomit and
the owners elected to euthanize.

This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners who had no idea raisins
could be a toxin. Please alert everyone you know who has a dog of this very
serious risk. Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic.


Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including
our ex-handler's. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern.

I moved to Orlando from the UK in March with my Landseer Puppy, well not quite a puppy anymore since he will be 4 in January.

Yes thought about leaving in the cooler climbs of England but just couldn't bring myself to do it so a hot weather Newf he now is.

Bonnie seems to have had some success uploading photos.

Now that the functions appear to be working just a couple of quick tips. When you select any type of album or selection under the gallery and then click on a picture you will notice that several buttons appear along the top of the picture. These allow you to do several actions



From left The book takes you back to the thumbnail menu, the i sign gives information on the image, the clapper board starts the slide show that will scroll through the entire album that you are viewing, the envelope will set up an email so you can email this image, and the left and right arrows go manually backward and forward through the images.

I use the slideshow all the time and it is a nice way to see all the images that have been loaded without having to manually scroll through them.

I am in the process of resizing all my pictures so I can upload them to the gallery. I am requesting that anybody that has pictures of Lakhota in his kilt please send them to me via e-mail or snail mail. Since Mom and Dad weren't there this year, they would like to see all the pictures we can get. In addition, we would like to show them to my grandfather who will be 98 on Christmas Eve. He is still mentally sharp as a tack, but unfortunately his body is not. So I would like to get them to him ASAP. Thank you all in advance.

I will also be posting pictures from the Eukanuba National Championship from Tampa this past January. The pictures are of our booth and were taken by Sue Berman. I have been working on scanning in older photos as well, and have also found pictures from previous parades to add to the gallery. This will take a bit of time, as the scanning is time consuming. I will also be posting pictures from a water fun day at Kim Chonko's house back in somewhere around 1995 or so. Since Kim can't seem to find any good pictures of her landseer girl Whistle, I have a few from this event.

Would love to see more people posting pictures to the site. If anyone needs any help, Paul is wonderful about helping and getting right back to people. I can also help anyone trying to upload to the site. It is very easy and painless to do.

For those of you who didn't know Ratty, she was my deaf white cat with one blue eye and one yellow. Her name was originally Brianon, but over time it was changed to Putty Tat, then Puddy Wat to Puddy Rat to just plain Rat or Ratty. Since she was deaf, she didn't care either way as long as we never called her late for dinner. Ratty never knew she was a cat. She grew up with dogs and thought she was a dog. She was by far the SWEETEST cat in the world. Even though she never had a litter, she was incredibley maternal. She mothered every animal that she ever came in contact with. It was amazing to watch her groom the rabbits, guinea pigs, lovebird, cockatiel, oppossums, prairie dogs, owls, turtles, snakes, baby alligators. You name it, if it was in this house, she would groom it and love it. I could trust her with ANY animal that came in here. I knew she would never hurt anything. She loved people as well. She always had a kiss for everyone. Even the vet techs right after her surgery when she was spayed. They were shocked. I guess they hadn't been around to many cats who like to give kisses. She loved car rides and eating. Those were her two favorite things.

My days have been dimmer without her light! I still see her around every corner. The other two cats P.I.T.A. and Sixes are definitely missing her. And Lakohta, Ranger and Precious were all with us as she crossed to the bridge to meet up with her other best friend, Honey, my sheltie I had for 15 1/2 years before she passed. Ratty and Honey used to love to wrestle together and sleep together. I take heart in knowing that they are both happy and healthy wrestling together and waiting for me and the rest of the family to join them.

We have had two Newfies. We lost our Lucy in 2005. Our new Newfie Ruby will be one this month. We never brought our other Newfie to Florida with us because of the heat and the park we stayed in did not allow pets, she always got to go stay with her mother and her 2 sisters, which was good for her and fun. Well things have changed, she is gone and so is her family. I have a friend who has watched our new Newfie for a day or two in an emergency, she owns a sheep farm and Ruby gets really good care., quite smelly but fun. We are going camping in a travel trailer to Bahia Honda State Park where they now let pets in. My husband does not think that a Newfie can take the heat. I say she can. She can do what we do, go in the ocean, go in the gulf, stay in the air-conditioning. She has the thinner wavy silky hair, not like our other Newfie who was a wooly booly, and had to be shaved at times. I found your sight and obviously Newfies can live in Florida so for sure they can visit, unless coming form 20-30 degrees to 80 would make a big difference, and how does the salt water effect them? I was hoping you could give me a little information and some encouragement to my husband that this was not a bad idea. I also wondered about insects and the control of them around her besides the frontline. She of course would be in the trailer except for walks etc. Thank You.

I'm not sure where these should go, but these are pictures of the home made plastic food and water stations we made for our big babies. They are the 32 gal. size plastic totes which are sold in most stores (Target, Lowe's, Dollar General, etc.), are less expensive than the metal stands, don't tip over, rust and are easy to clean. They are the perfect height for our Newfs and when used outdoors, keep the ground dirt out of their water.

Larry simply takes the lids, measures the stainless steel bowls under the lip, uses a compass and pencil to mark and saws the bowl sized circles out. I thought others might find these helpful.

We are owned by an 'Almost' 2 year old Newfie called Harry. He is almost exactly 1 month younger than my youngest son, they are best of friends, although both of them are still a bit too 'excitable' to hangout together. I think it is ok, the wife just about has a heart attack everytime William gets knocked down by Harry. Of course, William bounces back up and starts yelling for 'Harry' and tries to hug him.

We currently live up in Maryland, but are hoping to move down to Florida by the end of this summer. I was wondering what suggestions you all might have to help us with this move?

Not quite sure what area we are going to move into, kinda depends on job offers, but I am thinking either the Jackonsville, Orlando or Tampa areas. I ask because a Vet had suggested this for Harry last year. Last year we found out that he had a Spinal Infection and it had gotten bad enough that it was starting to effect him. Anyways, as he was being treated for it, it seemed that he was HOT all the time, and one of the Vets he was visiting had suggested shaving his belly areas so that he 'Looked' Newfie, but would be cool when he layed down (which works in theory, except that Harry likes to sleep on his back).

Are there such areas in Florida? (we will probably be up in Jacksonville). Are you allowed to swim with your dog also? I ask as Harry is great about baths, but that moving water???? Not so sure about that... LOL I think he would go in if he saw me having fun in there.

Lastly, down in Florida you all have a couple of Pesky little critters (with lots of teeth) that hang out in the water, that we don't have so much in Maryland. We no more than loaded Susan's crate, that I ran down the sidewalk to help move Bonnie's new crate from the vender's stall to Lori's motorhome. At the dinner that night I wanted to give the pics to those who had been at the St Pete Match the week before and discovered my pictures were missing. On Monday at the Dolthan, AL show, that nice man who owns Jefferson, and whose name escapes me at this moment recognised Larry from the pics he had found in their grooming area. He told us he gave them to someone in our club. Does anyone have our pictures? ( Hint: they would be pics of Newfs and people at the St Pete match)

Now for the brags, Brando earned his Draft Dog title on Thursday at the Nationals! Sunday was the first draft test and there were only 2 qualifiers and 1 requalifier. The freight haul was insane. It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon with temperature in the 80's and ont a cloud in the sky. By the time the dogs got to the freight haul, there were a million people and dogs in the park. The park was in Golden, about 20 minutes from the show sight. It was situated on a river. The freight haul went along the river on a sidewalk path. There were tons of people and dogs in the river. Some swimming, many kayaking. There were dogs both on and off leash all along the trail. Bicycle riders zooming past the dogs on the sidewalk from both directions. People portaging their kayaks from one part of the river to another carrying the kayaks at dog height on the trail, coming right at the dogs. I have never seen anything like it. Amazingly, Brando was doing really well until the back half of the trail which was up on the higher bank of the river. All of a sudden, Brando decided he had had enough pulling and wanted to take a swim! He was so determined to go, that he was actually going over a barrier to head down the steep bank. Gerri had to grab the back wheels of the cart to stop him from going over and injuring or drowning himself. Luckily they were able to try again on Thursday, where Brando did a great job and got his title!!!

Brando also got his first leg in Rally Advanced B on Tuesday. He wasn't showing on Monday and on Wednesday he was a bit distracted, so Gerri pulled him. Lakhota competed in Rally Advanced A on Monday and got his first leg and a 2nd place. We were so proud of him. We had not practiced one iota before going to Nationals and I didn't even think he would qualify. Boy was I surprised and thrilled that he not only qualified, but placed. He had an absolute blast doing it. Unfortunately later that day Lakhota fell and injured his hind end. (He fell on his right hip and aggravated his osteoarthritis.) When we went in to the Obedience ring for Novice A, we were excused because he was limping. We ended up spending Tuesday morning at the vet with him getting radiographs done to make sure he didn't break anything. Thank doG! So unfortunately I had to pull him from the rest of the obedience and Rally trials. He is now on Zubrin and back to his normal self! Henley showed in the AOC class in conformation on Thursday, while Gerri was at the draft test. Lenny and I stayed to watch him show. Dave Rich showed him for Gerri and did an excellent job with him. Henley looked great and really looked like he belonged in the ring with all the northern dogs! We were really proud of him. He didn't place, but he sure could have. Janice and Dov did a great job in the Rodeo, and kept the crowd very entertained. Dov did her 3 tricks very well and we were impressed! They were also one of the best teams at the barrel race.

We have been in Florida for two years and have not yet joined the Florida Newfoundland Club but want to. My husband Joe has been Newf owners for 30+years - we have had several rescues but our current dog is 4 and in need of foster parents for two months or so. One potential problem, he is not neutered as my husband would like to breed him first, so we would need to inform the host of that fact. What information do you need on him to help us try to find a loving home for him while my husbands job takes him out of town and I am traveling to Michigan with my daughter and her children and animals?

You could email me, or call my husband Joe at 989-280-9966 on his cell phone. Captain Barnicle Bill is with Joe in his 5th wheel in Alabama now (they have been traveling with a construction crew for 6 months) but Joe has to live out of hotels for the next 60 days or so and can't keep Captain with him. I can't fit him in my small car while I travel to Michigan - and I don't think he will do well in a kennel for all that time as he is such a people dog.

Do you have any suggestions for placement in either northern or central Florida or even in Alabama or southern Tennessee????? Thank you for your assistance. Oh, and could you email or mail an application? I didn't see on on your website.

I am looking for information regarding elbow anomaly. I have Newfie pup that is nearing 7 months old. He was x-rayed today and was diagnosed with elbow anomaly: his ulna and radius are not growing at the same rate. I've tried researching the net for more details, but most things come back to this being a fairly new disease in Newfies. I've contacted my breeder for advice, and her first thought was that my pup has down pasterns and I should add more calcium to his diet. My vets feel this is not something that will go away and additional calcium may actually make it worse. Whatever resources you can direct me to would be wonderful. Also, is this something I should report to the AKC or some other agency? I appreciate any help you can give me. I'm feeling extremely overwhelmed and undereducated. The little bit of info I do find re: this condition has a very bleak outcome for the pups. I'm sure I don't have to describe the pain that both our spectacular pup and our family is going through.

I am trying to learn as much as I can about the breed, as I am considering becoming a Newfie mom some time in the future. (not the near future, possiblly a couple of years) I want to be well informed and well prepared prior to making that commitment. I have never attended a dog show in my life, only a few horse shows when I lived in the northwest. I am interested in attending a few dog shows, and meeting a few responsible newfie owners and their dogs within a reasonable distance from my home. I currently live in Jensen Beach, so Orlando to Tampa, Fort Meyers, to Fort Lauderdale would be within reasonable driving distance for me. I do not intend to breed. Just interested in a great pet/buddy. I have been reading about your events, the water and drafting events look like they are a lot of fun. I really want to attend the parade, but I can't make it that weekend. If there are any upcoming shows in the south or central FL area in the near future, please let me know.

I have also been reading a lot about the importance of getting to know the breeder and knowing the health and soundness of the parents prior to buying a puppy or dog, contracts, guarantees, whether or not they will take back a sick dog or a dog you cant keep for some reason, etc. I have been checking out some newf rescue sites online as well. Also proper nutrition, and added concerns regarding extra large breeds, not to mention the special needs of a Newfoundland. There is just SO MUCH to learn! I will keep reading and researching.I also love to read all of your posts, and would like to meet active "newfie people" so I can see what it will take to give my future baby a proper home and the proper care.

Just A Dog

From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or, “that’s a
lot of money for just a dog.”

They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs
involved for “just a dog.”

Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.”

Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a dog,” but I did not once
feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a dog,” and in those
days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a dog” gave me comfort and reason to
overcome the day.

If you, too, think it’s “just a dog,” then you will probably understand phrases
like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”

“Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure
unbridled joy.

“Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better
person.

Because of “just a dog”, I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly
to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a dog” but an embodiment of all the
hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy
of the moment.

“Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from
myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a dog”, but the
thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a man or woman.”

So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog” just smile… because they “just
don’t understand.”

My Auntie just adopted a dog last week, and this dog has had a cough and runny nose since they got her home on Monday. Evidently the shelter staff knew of the problem at that time, and said nothing to my cousin when he and my aunt went to pick her up, nor when they brought her back to have her spayed, or friday when she returned for heart worm treatment, even when my cousin asked about her symptoms. When he went to pick her up later in the day there was a sign on the door saying there were no dogs available for adoption at this time, and STILL THE STAFF MEMBERS AND VET TOLD HIM NOTHING ABOUT THIS SICKNESS! They did not find out until they read about it in the paper! The article says to get rid of this all of the shelter dogs may have to be destroyed. This sweet little dog, Peaches, has had contact with other neighborhood dogs, my cousin's dog, the vet office, the groomer, the list goes on and on, and still, never a phone call from the county shelter with a word of caution or warning them! Lew Hall, owned by Noah and Momma Hall, has put together a wonderful fundraiser to support Newf Rescue. Newf Rescue is something very dear to Lew and Momma Hall's . They had many wonderful years with their rescue OHMY! and now have the pleasure of being adopted by Noah. See the attached flyer for more info and Lew's phone number for any questions.

Lew needs to get as many Newfs and their owners as possible to the event for a meet and greet. This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our wonderful dogs. I will probably be there (health permitting) and I don't even have a newf. Also going is Hailey, the little girl pictured on the flyer with Noah. Hailey lives in Orlando. For those of you who do not know about Hailey, she is a little girl who met OHMY! at St. Augustine in the Slave Market many years ago. He made such an impression on her, that her mother brings her to Tallahassee every year to see her OHMY! After OHMY! passed away, she continued to come to see Noah. She is now traveling from Orlando just to come and see her rescue newf Noah! This just shows how remarkable our dogs are and how much they need our support, so dogs like OHMY! and Noah get to the forever homes they so richly deserve. They need to be able to live up to that which they were bred to do, and with our help, they can!

I know there is a training workshop for the draft test the day before the event. This is perfect! George's house where the training will be is in Riverview which is close to St. Pete where the bowling alley is. Lew has already gotten $100 in donations from his bowling league and the flyer has only been up for 3 days. This would also be a neat thing for those involved in the draft test or wanting to learn more. We could even do a little draft demo at the bowling alley during the meet and greet. This may also help garner more spectators and possible stewards for the draft test (at George's) the following weekend.

But most importantly, this is for the dogs! Please plan to come with 1 or more of your newfs to this wonderful event.

My family is very interested in Newfoundland adoption (Yes, we will complete the application and reach out to Sharon... ). We have done quite a bit of research on the breed, have experience with other large breeds, and interacted with a newfie at the local dog park. However, we would like to meet a few more dogs to get a better feel for the differences in personality.

Will there be any events or upcoming fundraisers that will allow for an opportunity to meet the newfs?

I noticed there is going to be a "fun day" for the newfies in August and would like to come. Do I have to be a member already to go to it? Or is this one of the events we would go to, to find our sponsors to become a member? Info would be great

My family and I are in the process of getting a new Newf puppy, We both had them growing up and want our kids to have the same love and appreciation for these genital giants as we do.
We are still deciding on a name but we know its going to me a male so if anyone has ideas please feel free to post them.

We live in Port St. Lucie but migrated hear only a year ago from the north.

Note: There are breeders out there who are good “salespersons”, and who will talk in circles. Demand to see proof of what they say they have accomplished with the breed. A reliable breeder will be happy to provide you with what you ask for.

Web sites should show pictures of their dogs in the ring as well as at play.

Few questions:

1. Who are you guys using for groomers? We do our at home share of trimming and daily burshing, but a once in a while treatment would be nice.

2. Does ANYONE know of any central florida locations that allow swimming? He does go to the dog park at Lakemonte and Aloma, but I don't allow him to swim too far because of all the alligator warnings.

3. Is anyone on this forum the owner of a landseer male that goes to that dog park on Wednesday morning? My boss goes every wednesday morning and sees one there, but I haven't been able to make it out.

4. Anyone interested in a Central Florida gathering? I can't make the even on the 9th, but a gathering at a set park would be fun.

Cosmo turns 1 tommorow, so he is going to the dog park. We have two newfies, a Landseer 13 months old and a black newf 10 months old. Theyhave the same sire, different dams, and are very different in both confirmation and personality. The Landseer, Bos'n, is very active and rambunctous, longer legs and thinner, while our black newf, Tipps, is very laid back and mellow, beefy and stocky.

Is there really a difference or is it just personality? He retrieved his aqua water wubbas that I just got for him. He thought they were great fun. But I think he had more fun chasing me into the water. I would throw the toy and he would just stand there. Then I would start to go out to the toy and he would come bounding along porpoising behind me and trying to catch my arms until he had to swim. He was so funny to watch. He had this great big smile on his face the whole time. And after he was done retrieving a few times, he was too tired to swim anymore, so he sat on my lap in the water giving his Grandma and me kisses. He just snuggled right into me with his little head on my shoulder and chilled out in the nice cool water.

We are going to take him 2 to 3 times a week, weather permitting. Mom and I had so much fun with him. He is just so smart and cute. And I have a true water dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think he might even actually jump off of something into the water. Highlighting the Street Fair is the International Pet Parade for Peace, beginning at 11:00am
from Hannibal Square. All people and well socialized pets on a leash are invited to take part in

Culminating the five-day film festival is a Global Peace Film Festival Street Fair in Winter
Park on Morse Blvd. between Park and Knowles Avenues from 10am to 3pm on September 21 -

Avenue, the street fair will include demonstrations and activities as well as shopping. “How to

We stopped in St. Augustine on Saturday on our way home from Jekyll Island (Kermit will tell you more about that trip shortly). We went into Faux Paws on St. George Street to talk to the owner Joan. She is a very lovely lady who has always been very generous to our club for this annual event. Last year when Jeannette and I went to the store, we didn't get there until Sunday afternoon. Almost everything Newfy had been bought out already. I ended up only being able to get a Landseer Newfy angel in Lakhota's memory. (They have always been given out in the past at the Blessing of the Newfs, but weren't last year, so I bought my own.) So, this year Joan and I wanted to make sure she has enough stuff for everyone. She has some new catalogs with brand new items. She has some beautiful new purses, a great new pewter key chain, a really cute new ornament of a newfy pup in a stocking (Newf head is sculpted in resin the stocking is fabric and stuffed), and many other items. I put in a big order for myself which I will pick up when I get there. One of the pictures in the catalog that can be used on a number of items is a Landseer pup that looks an awful lot like Mr. Kermit the Dog. So, I ordered a beautiful faux leather purse with that picture on it. I also finally am getting an arm band holder (for the show ring to hold your number on your clothes instead of using rubber bands) with the same picture on it. I have been wanting one for years and never found quite the one I wanted. I ordered the key chain for myself since my Dad bought the one Joan happened to have in the shop. And the last thing that I ordered was an embroidered newf hand towel which I will use as a drool rag when Kermit finally gets into the ring. I know that Joan will be ordering more of those as well. She was completely out of our breed at the time. Mom bought this fabulous nightshirt with 2 pockets on the front. Just the kind my mom loves to wear around the house. So, make sure you check out the shop when we are in St. Augustine and patronize the store. Joan always donates quite a few items to us for the auction and brown bag raffle every year. And she truly cares about making us happy. They have taught me grooming techniques and encouraged me to join the club.
It was also at that time, that I met Mickey also.
It was these five whom taught me to research my bloodlines thoroughly and to check those health clearences. I was so grateful to them since I almost bought a newfoundland puppy from a breeder whose sire was gorgeous in type( so I thought since I only saw size and coat) who would not show me the clearences. I listened and I learned.
I finally decided after 3 years, to adopt my Gunnery from Kloofbear.
Not that I wouldn't adopt a newfoundland from any of these breeders, because I would in a heartbeat. No one had a litter at the time.

I just got off the phone with the owner, Meredith. Her girl is 2 years old, named Phoebe. She has been missing since Oct. 27th from the Bluffs community in Jupiter, FL. She was out wandering in the yard with her roomate's pit bull. The pit bull was found by the Humane Society in Juno Beach (next town over) and the roommate was called, however, no one found the newf. The feeling is that she has been taken by someone. She is a smallish girl weighing about 95 lbs.

Please keep your eyes and ears open, to see if we can help find this dog who is missed terribly by her owner. If you here of anyone just getting a new landseer that is around 2 years old all of a sudden, please find out as much info as you can and call either Meredith at 561-633-1116, or me at 561-745-7067. She has reported the dog missing to the police. She has alerted all the shelters, and I have advised her to bring the flyers to all of the vets in the area.

Physically, he bruised Gunny's hind leg and pulled a clump out of his rear and back.
Emotionally, Gunny showed beautifully until he went back into Winner's class and made the turn and there was a Rottie sitting there and he refused to move. He will probably never forget this. The owner of the Rottie never even came forward to see if Gunny was alright.
Gunny is so sweet that he did not defend himself but I covered him and bocked him as much as possible. The Rottie attacked him from behind and broke loose from the handler.
Third, I decided to stay for the rest of the day to try to reassure Gunny that not all dogs will attack him. We are just sitting there and a lady staring photographing him. Finally. she introduced herself as a photographer from the Ocala Star Banner. Gunny is in today's paper.
What a day!!!!!!!!!

I just got confirmation that there is indeed a Landseer newf in the movie. Now I have known about this since the filming, but was waiting for the movie to come out (because I didn't know if the scene would end up on the cutting room floor.), that one of OUR club members is the newf in the movie. Lori and Troy Wilson's girl Cheyenne. Stacy Marino, the animal wrangler that I work with, is also in the movie. She is the one who brought Cheyenne. So if you are going to see the movie, watch for Cheyenne in the scene at the obedience class. She is actually right next to Marley. I cannot remember which dog Stacy is working in the scene. Also the author of the book and his wife are also both in the scene working dogs in the class.

His litter was abandoned and my Uncle's girlfriend was a helping to find a home for the the last survivor. They called first and I said "NO WAY" after all life was busy with a three year old underfoot and I worked two jobs at the time I had no time for a dog. So being very understanding of my current situation she brought him over so I could meet him face to face and ofcourse I couldn't resist. Apparently nobody wanted him because his paws were so big they knew he was going to be a huge dog and alot of "work".
I had no idea what a Newfoundland was or that they even existed. Turns out he is a newfie mix don't know what he's mixed with but he has all the characteristics of any newfie I have ever read about. "Sampson" instantly became a member of the family and it has been so much fun watching him grow up with our son. Our poor kid has been slobbered on and used as a Newfie pillow for every road trip we've taken in the last 9+ years.
Everyone who meets him just adores him I can't even begin to imagine my life without him. He has recently begun working as a therapy dog and he absolutley loves it, It makes me so happy to see him bring so much joy to people. Anyway thats a quick update on me and Sampson and glad to see this forum is here - I have been reading and reading. As some of you already know, Merlin and I moved to Palm Coast, which is in Flagler County. I am in need of finding a really good vet out in this general area, as well as an emergency vet, just in case. Merl's all up on his shots, thankfully, so I'm taking my time in locating a vet I really like. However, any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated.

They are both about 70 pounds now. Nana completed puppy agility class (learned every piece of equipment but not at full height) a month or so ago at our dog training club in Rochester, and they have both completed puppy obedience from PetsMart. We are still struggling with potty training a bit, but doing okay. Accidents are rare these days, for which I am glad! Both are also crate trained.

Are there any good trainers in my area? I am looking for something more serious- then PetsMart, but not a boot camp either! I would like both pups to get their CGC/TDI eventually, and perhaps an obedience title. Hershey seems pretty inclined to obedience, where Nana is way more bouncy, and gets bored really easily. She is our ADD pup.

I was also wondering if there was any other newf owners in the area, and if you get together with your dogs. I used to live in Baltimore as well and they had a newf swim once a month. I moved not long after finding that group, but the meets were fun. They also did a dog park meeting at various locations once a month too. I live just about equal distance between "West Park Dog Park" and "John Chestnut Sr. Dog Park".. I havent been to either yet, so if anyone has any experience with either of these please let me know.

In NY we had a 1/2 acre fenced yard, but here in FL we just have a tiny yard, but our house does back up to a canal (which leads to a creek then old tampa bay.) Not sure how safe that is for swimming though I worry about giardia and gators and sharks! Also our realtor said there is a dog swimming beach on some island, but i forget which, and that we could let our dogs swim off the Courtney Campbell bridge (???) so again, if anyone has any info about good places to let dogs swim please let me know!

I am especially interested to see if my Newfs will swim, my first Newf Tuggy had real bad SAS, and though we took him to the beach often he never actually went in more then his ankles, and we never forced him. We had worked with a veterinary cardiologist who had said that we should offer him things to do but not force him into physical activities if he didnt want to do them, so we never did, my golden though lives for the water! I would really like my pups to have the opportunity to swim and also perhaps earn a water title some day!

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called ' Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

I'm making plans on getting myself and Merlin up to MI. The logistics are beginning to scare the crap out of me, so I'm hoping that some of you who are also going can help out.

Would any who are driving up have a little room for an extra folding crate and grooming table, possibly a cart (collapsed)? I can't take off early enough to spend the extra time to rent a van and drive up, and I think the drive would stress me out way too much, anyway. Even if 3 people could take just one of these items, I would pay each for the extra space used to transport. I am staying at the host hotel with a couple of friends from Seattle, so you won't need to go far to find me.

We are in the Tampa area, and are looking for a breeder that has puppies coming sometime in the next few months. We are able to travel a few hours away, to get a little bundle of joy for our family. We have a nice fenced in yard, and are getting a pool installed later on in the year. We are a military family, so we get to use the services of a military veterinarian. We have a 2 and a half year old son, and we have been wanting to get a dog for him to grow with, and after all the research I have done, we know a newfoundland is the perfect decision for us.

So, if anyone can point us in the right direction, that would be great!

So I kept myself happy by going to Crufts and other local dog shows to see other people's newfs. We moved across the pond to St Augustine 7 years ago, and my thoughts turned to getting a newfie again, but the heat worried me. We rescued a local mixed breed instead. Now here comes the interesting part of the story....how Max came into our lives.
Three days before Christmas, we were doing some last minute shopping, and my daughter wanted to look at the puppies in the puppy store. I hate the idea of these places, couldn't believe they even existed when we moved here. We went in, and I was shocked to see they actually had a Newfoundland for sale. I instantly started to worry for this boy. It was almost guaranteed he would be an impulse purchase, and what would happen after Christmas, once he got bigger than than the owners expected and he started to drool everywhere? I decided to purchase him on impulse myself! Bad move I know, but I'd been thinking of these dogs for so long, it was time to take action and actually have one. At least I knew what to expect of these dogs. Amazingly, or rather worryingly, all the shop owner said was that this type of dog was Nana in Peter Pan. Great piece of info!
I knew of the potential pitfalls regarding health and his unknown background. Those pitfalls soon surfaced on Christmas day when he was admitted for emergency treatment for kennel cough and diarrhea. It eventually became pneumonia. So it was a bad move for my wallet, but it was a good move for Max. We love him, and we're going to give him the best home. Sorry for such a long first post!
Am I right in thinking there is an event (draft test) in Jacksonville this weekend? Which day would be the best to attend, and would I be able to bring Max with me?

Our Newfie is only 4 mo. and hasn't had much training yet, Petsmart has a class that she will be starting in a couple of weeks. When her "big sister" (Newfie/Golden cross) was a puppy she went weekly and it worked out pretty well.... she still remembers the "tricks" if you have a treat for her.

You couldn't have a better goodwill ambassador than Micky! My wife Carmen, who'd never met a Newfie before, was taken right off by this lover-bear's mighty stature and gentle nature. My daughter was playing shy during the visit, but immediately afterwards was claiming 'Brushing Rights' for our Newf-to-come. Both my ladies have been talking non-stop about the experience with Micky, and that is saying something! (not the talking non-stop part ... the talking about a dog! )

Paul and Linda did an outstanding job of telling us about the requirements, particulars, and challenges of the breed, and were the ideal intellectual partners to Micky's indefatigable charm!

So we just wanted to give a public Shout Out to the Lawson's and to Micky for taking the time to come by, and we look forward to the opportunity to accept one of these great dogs into our family!

I absolutely LOVE my Booster Bath. It is a God send. Saves my back and the dogs don't mind it at all. I highly recommend it for anyone who has been thinking about it. Even if you aren't a Costco member, it is still worth it. I believe they charge like another $6.50 for non members. I just adopted a young landseer - she was four and a half months and was very reserved at first. We are slowly getting her out of her shell.

She discovered puddles the other day and that seemed to make her happy. Walking and splashing in the water.

She doesn't run. She seems to do this funny trot.

I would like to learn more about this wonderful dog.

Meetups in the Jacksonville area and other types of meetings appreciated - and all types of information helpful.

The bad news about Maddox. The vet says he has flea allergies. We've treated the yard, the cats, the house, etc. I feel bad because he chews at his hind half incessantly. The front half of him is gorgeous, but the back half makes him almost look sickly. It started as a small hot spot a while ago, and it has just become so bad. We used to use advantage, but that really didn't seem to help - so we switched to a different brand that only Banfield has - it works great. There can be zero fleas to be found on Maddox, but he still chews and scratches for most of his waking hours. We've done steroids and antibiotics, but we're running into financial walls. I just don't know why he keeps itching, I know for a few days afterwards with the fleas jumping off, or the remants of a bite - like we itch mosquito bites for days after - but it almost seems he does it for either attention or he's managed to become neurotic about it.

When we got him, we didn't expect the budget to turn sour and get so bad. It's hard for us to treat him the way he deserves to be treated. I don't know whether to find him a more suitable home or find another way to help soothe his skin. Any ideas?

Shiva, an 8 year old, female, half New Guinea Singing Dog half Australian Kelpie, who is a sweet and fun little girl. Both our dogs are kind of "rescue". We got Shadow 10 years ago from an ex-neighbor that did not take care of her properly. And we found Shiva in the middle of the Everglades when she was about 6/7 months old.
We have been reading and doing research about the Newfoundland breed for sometime now and we both feel that a Newfoundland will not only fit our lifestyle, but we can be good "parents" to a Newfie too. We are in the process of moving from the Keys to the Daytona Area and our new place should be ready in the next 2 months.
I want to thanks Kristi, from Rescue, for answering my emails and the info she has provided us with.
We have many questions about the dogs, so we will be posting regularly.

I adopted the wonderful Apache (now known as Patchie) in December. He is about 7 years old now.

As soon as I got him, we began very short walks twice a day. first just up and down the street. We gradually increased until we walked about 15-20 minutes 2 times a day. Very occasionally a 30 minute walk. This was during the winter but I am always mindful of the temperature. Also I know he is getting older with a touch of arthritis but he has always seemed okay.

About three months ago things began to change. If he heard a basketball bouncing he would turn around to go home. Same for workers on roofs, a fire siren in the distance, etc. Finally he would just stop at the end of the street and go no further. I thought, well, it's getting warmer, we'll just do short walks for a while. And for a time, we'd walk to the end of the street and back.

Hello,

We are in the late stages of acquiring a newfie puppy from an NCA registered breeder in Pennsylvania and they recommended we contact you for the name of a veterinarian in the Miami area (we live in Miami Beach) that was familiar with the breed, or at a minimum dealt regularly with large breed dogs. Are you aware of any in our area? We have already contacted Amarosa Newfs, but they informed us that they rarely use vets and did not recommend anyone. Also, if you are familiar with any reasonably priced groomers in our neighborhood we would appreciate that as well.
Our other primary concern is obedience classes. Is there a good doggie school you would recommend in our area? We would initially be looking for puppy classes, but would like to continue to at least complete the CGC.

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

We had just adopted Patchie in December; he was fostered by the Ekerts. By the second day he was here he and I had bonded - I was his person and he was my Newf. He was a wonderful dog with just a bit of stubborness and mischief in him. This was his forever home even if it was only a short eight months. His life was filled with love and dignity (except when he was eating his own poop).

Thanks to the Eckerts for fostering him, the Rompots and Chonkos for helping with the adoption process, Mickey Sterling and Jan Sowers for talking with me on the phone last fall so I could learn more about Newfs, and everyone who provided help here on the forum.

We are heartbroken. Patchie was the first dog I ever had - he was the best dog I ever had.

We, my husband and I, just lost our Newfie mix on July 18th. She almost made it to her 10th birthday. She had cancer. We adopted Callie from our local animal shelter when she was just a year old. Even though we have still have two Border Collies in our home, there is a huge hole where she once lived. I still walk with caution in the middle of the night so I don't trip over the "black shadow" that was Callie sleeping at the end of the bed.

Any more infomation about adoption would be appreciated.

She had really slowed down and was having a great deal of trouble getting up and even standing up. She was spending almost all her time in our bathroom except when she went for a walk. When Kim's parents came over on last Sunday Valkyrie did not even get up off the bathroom floor, and she would always meet them at the door. All these things made us realize that Valkyrie was in a lot more pain than she was letting on so we decided to do what was best.

Thor has been looking for Valkyrie everywhere since we came home both inside and outside.

WE miss her very much.

Also I will have all 3 of my dogs with me most likely, which includes my golden retriever, Hugs. Are Newf siblings allowed, or would he have to go to some sort of Doggy Day Care? What time is the parade? Also what is the noise factor? Recently one of our neighbors set off fireworks while my dog Hershey was outside, now he is nervous of loud noises, though I am working on this.

Any help appreciated.

Unfortunately, I am newly single since my fiancee and I decided to part. Maddox was to be with his dad, but now he says he doesn't want to take care of Maddox and wants to drop him to a shelter on Monday.

He's two years old almost (Oct 27th). landseer, not neutered, sweet, intelligent, and I think he deserves better than a person from a shelter and someone who can appreciate him. Just recently he has started counter surfing anywhere there's food that he can get to. It hasn't been a problem before and he's been able to "reach" the tops of the counters for a long time.

I'm thinking that he's going through one of those growth "spurts" and is just hungry for anything tasty (or not, he ate a pair of my socks then threw them up last week).%-6

This thing is really huge: 54"L x 46"H x 35" W. It is the coated wire folding type, but I've utilized snap ties to make it quite rigid; if you travel I guess the folding feature would be handy. I've got a custom made cage cover with roll-up end flaps (light sage), and a nice bed with complimentary cover of the same heavy cotton duck material. I paid a small forture for it all, but if it isn't going to be used it doesn't make much sense keeping it around to take up space; I'd be happy to get ~ $200 back out of it. And as I said, it is new and unused, unless you count Amy walking in it twice for a total of maybe 2 minutes.

I figure someone out there would probably have a good use for it, thought I'd post it here before trying CraigsList or something. If interested email me back at captdanf@hotmail.com.

My husband and I just became new parents of an 11 month old male puppy named Trace. This is our first newfie and we are hooked! We have two other furry children named Lacy (beagle 11 years old female) and Shady (mutt 5 years old female). We live in Spring Hill in Hernando County and were wondering if there are any other newfie parents near us. In hopes to have our newfies meet up in the future. We are happy to be part of this group and look forward to meeting you all!!

I was wondering at what age do Newfs stop growing. Edna is a year long. She has a long torso and short legs. Even if she is short she is quite a beauty. She looks very healthy and her face and expression has matured. Have your Newfs grown proportionately? Should I expect to see her grow a little more?

We think our female landseer will be coming into season soon, she is almost 9 months old and we are starting to see some signs. What does everyone use for diapers? Just need a recommendation, we haven't been down this road with a newf before, and haven't done it with a non-neutered male in the house... yikes...

I can't come up with a good reason that this goofy, gentle soul was not granted a long life, but I am thankful that he was able to overcome his fears and had a year full of love and happiness. In spite of all of his fears, he was never afraid of people and loved everyone he met. Thank you to everyone who rescued him, bathed him, and loved him. He was one of a kind and will be eternally missed.

We are down in New Orleans where there are not too many newf resources. We absolutely love Samson our 7.5 month old newf and did plenty of research before we decided on the breed. Samson is everything they said he would be, loveable, mild tempered, and very easily trained. The only problem we can't understand is why he is scared of everything and everyone. Dogs, people, ducks, cats, heights, water, stairs, and the list goes on.... He actually runs and gets in his kennel when the leash comes out because he doesn't want to leave the house. He jumps up on the bed but is too scared to jump down. We have a large pool we thought he would love but he is terrified of it... So we bought a baby pool to cool him off in the heat but he is scared of that too!!! We tried coaxing with treats, positive reinforcement, but we don't want to force him and make him even more scared. What are we not doing right? Are other newfs this scary? Our labs have always been daredevils so we don't think it is our temperament that is causing this behavior. Another problem is when he gets scared of people or kids he barks and pounces around and at 105lbs he looks pretty scary to other people, but we known he would never hurt a fly. Does anyone have any advice to help us?

A potential puppy mill at worst and uneducated backyard breeder at best is in our midst here in FL. The chances of his having a healthy girl of a type which would contribute to the betterment of the breed is slim, given the lack of education about the breed, protocols, health clearances, and when I spoke to him about showing his dog, to have an expert opinion as to the fitness and breed type of his Newfoundland he wanted to know, "Show my Newfoundland what?"
Any potential puppy purchaser who thinks they will get a knowledgable mentorship from someone who has no idea what they are doing and doesn't care to learn. will be in for a rough time when they need the support of a reputable breeer. The chance of a puppy produced by such an individual ending up in rescue is astronomical. If anyone would like more specific info about this man contact me privately.
