The breed’s thick coat is medium to Long in length and should be coarse. The undercoat is very soft. They will shed very heavily in the spring and not so heavily in the fall. Regular Grooming is a must or the coat gets Out of control very quickly. Newfoundlands also drool! There will be drool on the floor, furniture, ceiling, and on every occupant of a household that has a Newf. These are not dogs for neat people!
Care and Responsibility
Please give some thought to the questions below, rather than automatically answering ‘yes’. The Newf is a high maintenance dog and while you may sincerely love the breed you may also discover that you do not have the time or the resources to devote to its upkeep. However, if you do, a Newf will more than repay you with a lifetime of loyalty.
Are you prepared for the expenses associated with the Newfoundland? Such as quality food, yearly heartworm check and monthly preventative, rabies vaccinations, stool checks, etc.  Yes
 No
Are you willing to spend half an hour every other day for grooming and even more time during the spring and fall? Or to have the dog professionally groomed regularly?  Yes
 No
Are you prepared to deal with the cost (which often is more expensive due the breed’s large size) of no routine/ emergency veterinary care, especially as the dog gets older?  Yes
 No
Are you willing to provide training to solve any behavioral problems?  Yes
 No
What behavior problems would you consider intolerable (ex. Biting, growling, barking, digging, house soiling, etc.)?

Females are generally smaller and range from 24-28 inches at the shoulder and weigh from 100-140 pounds. Newfs also come in several colors. A major downside of the breed is the fact that they can be relatively short lived. The average life span of a Newf is 10 to 12 years. They can have many health problems including hip dysplasia, heart abnormalities, allergies and even cancer. Veterinary costs are often increased due to their large size. Heartworm medication, anesthesia and antibiotic costs are all dependent on the size of the dog.

Where did you hear about Newfoundland Rescue?
Newfs are a trainable breed. They can excel in obedience, tracking and agility. The NCA offers test that demonstrate the breed’s original purposes. The DD (Draft Dog) title is conveyed upon a dog that has passed a draft test. WD (Water Dogs) and WSD (Water Rescue Dog) titles are given to dogs that have passed the junior and senior divisions of the NCA water test. A versatility title or VN (Versatile Newfoundland) is earned by a dog that has a Confirmation Championship and WRD and DD Titles.
